Revisiting the 1994 G.I. Joe Shadow Ninjas: A Unique Twist in the Final Chapter of the O-Ring Era

Story by Mitchell Smith
Welcome to the Outpost. Today I’m taking a look at the 1994 G.I. Joe Shadow Ninjas. Bushido, Night Creeper, Nunchuck, Slice, Snake Eyes, and Storm Shadow. It was a very shaky time for GI Joe and it was getting harder and harder to sell or please fans. Or perhaps it was that the bulk of GI Joe fans were in high school, college, or starting a family and life with action figures was a thing of the past. Hasbro closed the doors on the beloved 3-3/4 inch O-Ring figure that so many of us had grown up with.
While many were saddened by the decision, many like me had no idea the popular figures were no longer being produced. The final run was interesting and has some of my favorite characters who I would love to see in an animated series some day. The Shadow Ninjas may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they do have a unique coolness to them, and fall into the nineties overall wacky style.
They each could be dipped into warm water to change the color of the figure. This was also a popular feature on Hot Wheels back in the day. My favorite figure from this line is Storm Shadow, but having them all in hand they all are very cool figures. I got these in a lot I bought like 15 years ago and I never realized they changed color. I’m always discovering new things when I dive into a new story. Who had Shadow Ninjas as a kid? Make sure to check back for our next discussion.
